General Dupont<\/b>, following Napoleon\u2019s orders, moves along with his troops from Vitoria to C\u00e1diz in order to free a French float that had been retained. Passing through C\u00f3rdoba, he is attacked by a small Spanish army, that he managed to defeat, allowing his men to ransack the city as a reward.<\/p>\n

Consequently, the fleet meant to be rescued was attacked, and thus Dupont\u2019s original objective and reason for this trip vanished. In addition, the Supreme Provincial Board of Sevilla<\/b>, recently created, was organizing an important army, which unsettled Dupont, all but stopping his advance and causing him to request Madrid for back up.<\/p>\n

Days later, fearful, Dupont pulls back all the way to And\u00fajar, where back up from the Generals Vedel and Gobert <\/b>awaited. Meanwhile, the General Casta\u00f1os<\/b> develops the plan called \u201cPlan of Porcuna<\/b>\u201d, with which he intended to attack Dupont\u2019s army.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not long after, the historic event would take place, when Casta\u00f1os being near And\u00fajar unnerved Dupont and caused him to retreat on Bailen\u2019s direction the night of the 18th of July. His decision was a direct consequence of the situation he found himself at, considering that a confrontation taking place in Meng\u00edbar between a small number of men pertaining to General Reding<\/b>, and the troops under Vedel and Gobert\u2019s charge, causes the loss of the later and the retreat of the french towards La Carolina and Santa Elena. Dupont found himself without any sort of protection in Bail\u00e9n, leaving them vulnerable to Reding and Casta\u00f1os\u2019 troops.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, Dupont\u2019s fears were founded and confirmed on the early hours of the 19th of July\u2019s morning in Bail\u00e9n, when his soldiers stumbled upon Reding\u2019s, who had camped there in order to head towards And\u00fajar where the attack was originally meant to take place according to Casta\u00f1os\u2019 plan.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
