The 22nd of July<\/b>, in the Casa de Postas del Camino Real<\/b>, in a humble inn on the outskirts of Villanueva de la Reina, the surrender was officially signed. The next day, in the battlefield, the French army honoured the Spanish army, of which we have no documentary proof. The painter Jos\u00e9 Casado del Alisal represents this scene in one of his paintings. <\/b><\/p>\n

This victory meant new hope for Spain, and the beginning of the end of Napoleon\u2019s rule over Europe, despite the fact that the War of Independence<\/b> would stretch over the next six years. <\/b><\/p>\n

Fernando VII<\/b> was freed, and eagerly welcomed back by the Spanish people, who dubbed him \u201cEl Deseado<\/b>\u201d (The desired one). Meanwhile, in 1812 <\/b>another historical event takes place, when the Cortes of C\u00e1diz<\/b> meet to develop the first Spanish Constitution<\/b>, commonly known as \u201cLa Pepa<\/b>\u201d, which could not come entry into force until 1833 due to the absolutist government established upon the king\u2019s return.<\/span><\/p>\n

For this heroic feat, Bail\u00e9n received numerous awards and recognition, such as the title of \u201cVery Noble and Loyal<\/b>\u201d obtained in 1890<\/b>, or the City status<\/b>, given in 1850<\/b>. The Queen Isabel II demanded from then on<\/b> that every city with more than 10.000 inhabitants must name one of their three main streets under the name of Bail\u00e9n, and ordered the construction of an ornamental public fountain coupled with a marble statue, to improve the water supply of such a noble city, additionally, in recognition of the merits of the inhabitants, who actively participated in the battle, at the town mayor\u2019s request. Nowadays, the fountain is known as \u201cLa Diosa Ibera de la Plaza del General Casta\u00f1os\u201d (The Iberian Goddess of General Casta\u00f1os\u2019 square) <\/b>or “La Matrona\u201d (The Matron)<\/b>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
