This square, built as a true reflection of the twinning between Bailén and the Greek town of Spetses, is a symbol that displays unity between towns.
Both towns belong to the European Historical Re-enactment Network, other members of which also include Cork and Dublin in Ireland, Slavkov in the Czech Republic, Tewkesbury in the United Kingdom, Brussels in Belgium and Spetses and Hydra in Greece.
The reason for twinning with this town specifically is due to the similarities between our local heroine, María Bellido, who played a key role in the Battle of Bailén of 1808 and Laskarina Bouboulina, protagonist during the Greek War of Independence in 1821.
